The programme is initially aimed at pregnant women, and pre-school and primary school populations of the municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere.

The programme includes health literacy actions with the distribution of oral promotion materials, the identification of oral health problems and the possibility of referring pregnant women, children and young people to the consultations carried out under the scope of the clinical practice classes of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Dental Medicine of the FMUC.

Data from the third national study on the prevalence of oral diseases reveal that 45% of Portuguese children have bad teeth, a reality that, for Ana Luísa Costa, professor of dentistry at the FMUC, should not be neglected: “it is fundamental to promote a greater intervention among the school community, especially in pre-school education and in the 1st cycle of basic education”.

About oral health in pregnancy, the specialist in paediatric dentistry considers that “the surveillance and prevention of oral problems in this phase is fundamental to guarantee a good development of gestation and birth, since oral pathologies and systemic pathologies are strictly related and mutually interrelated”. According to the specialist “the intervention with pregnant women, in the context of primary health care, is one of the most effective ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating oral health problems during pregnancy and preventing potential complications that could affect the foetus”.

This is a protocol that also presupposes the implementation of health intervention policies, which must be based on a concerted strategy of literacy and promotion of knowledge, always having in mind a specialised and dedicated human intervention, as well as the distribution of materials and instruments that enable the implementation of good practices in a continuous and cyclically reinforced manner.

For Carlos Robalo Cordeiro, director of the FMUC, “oral pathologies, highly prevalent in children and adults, have a huge environmental and behavioural influence and are generally preventable from an early age. In this sense, this initiative reflects our mission as an institution related to the training and promotion of disease prevention, which involves a clear focus on health literacy through a close relationship with civil society.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) and the Municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere have launched a Programme to Promote Oral Health for pregnant women, children and young people in the municipality.
