In addition, I have always loved images and photography. And during my college career, still, in my undergraduate degree, I started recording my clinical cases. I had a camera from an early age and took the opportunity to take a lot of photographs at college, particularly for my final coursework. Many of my colleagues did not have that type of equipment and I was the one who took photographs of the cases, so I improved my technique. When I was at the end of my degree, some professors at the Institute asked me if I wanted to be part of the teaching staff of a subject that would be created in the Dental Prosthesis course, called “Aesthetics and Photography”. I accepted but decided to undergo specific training in photography before starting to teach this course. So, that’s where my professional connection to photography began. I took the professional photography course at the Portuguese Institute of Photography and then, for 12 years, I taught the “Aesthetics and Photography” course at ISCSS.

“Photography is essential not only as a means of diagnosis, but also as a method of planning clinical treatments and, sometimes, even as legal and/or forensic evidence”

How important is it to you for your colleagues to photograph the cases, to invest in photography?

It’s all important! Photography is essential not only as a means of diagnosis, but also as a method for planning clinical treatments and, sometimes, even as legal and/or forensic evidence, in addition to having other practical applications. It allows the dentist to analyze and evaluate, with more peace of mind and attention, the work he is carrying out. It is used to communicate with patients, but also with colleagues, for example, to ask for an opinion. Having a well-documented case helps us in numerous aspects. Furthermore, it also helps us to evolve academically: the photographic record of work allows it to be used in presentations of clinical cases at conferences or even in the preparation of scientific articles. In short, imaging is indispensable in dentistry.

This is what Luís Valadares says, a dentist for 22 years and a trainer in the field of photography.
