The Assembly of the Republic approved today a set of initiatives aimed at establishing a Career for Dentists within the National Health Service (SNS), in a decision that marks a historic moment for oral health in Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Ag\u00eancia Lusa, the bill presented by the PS parliamentary group was approved unanimously, while the PAN bill received abstentions from PSD, Chega, PS, IL and CDS-PP, with both now going to the Health Committee. Chega\u2019s initiative, which sought to integrate dental medicine into the existing special medical career within the SNS, with the necessary adjustments, was rejected, as were the bills from BE and Livre, which proposed the creation of a new career for dentists in the public health service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During Thursday\u2019s debate, the different parliamentary groups agreed on the need to create this career, with several parties warning about the precarious employment conditions of most dentists working in the SNS. Due to the lack of a specific career path, most of the 150 dentists are hired as service providers, on freelance contracts, while the remaining professionals are placed in general careers, such as senior technician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PS bill states that access to dental care is \u201cone of the greatest difficulties within health care,\u201d a situation linked to the fact that for decades there was almost no oral health care in the SNS. The socialists emphasize that their governments launched the National Oral Health Promotion Program and included the creation of 129 dental clinics in the PRR, and that this investment must now be matched by \u201cthe allocation of human resources integrated into attractive career paths\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the bill approved today, the career applies to dentists under individual employment contracts working in public business entities within the SNS, and their integration must be formalised by a government order within a maximum of 90 days from the date it enters into force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its bill, PAN estimates that around 25% of the population does not have the financial means to access dental consultations, highlighting the \u201cinsufficient public coverage in this area,\u201d and also warning about the integration of dentists into inadequate and precarious labour regimes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
