{"id":390,"date":"2017-07-19T08:49:42","date_gmt":"2017-07-19T08:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dentalpro.pt\/en\/?p=390"},"modified":"2018-03-05T14:29:26","modified_gmt":"2018-03-05T14:29:26","slug":"how-fares-portuguese-oral-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dentalpro.pt\/en\/2017\/07\/19\/how-fares-portuguese-oral-health\/","title":{"rendered":"How fares Portuguese oral health?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Directorate General of Health presented the third National Epidemiological Study on Oral Disease which, for the first time, demonstrates results about the state of oral health in 18, 35 to 44 and 65 to 74-year old Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>Within the Nacional Study for Oral Disease Prevalence III, developed in partnership by the National Dental Health Promotion Program and the Portuguese Dental Association, a sample of 6315 individuals was examined, representative at national level.<\/p>\n<p>The study covered the five regional health administrations, as well as the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira. The field work began at the end of 2012 and concluded \u00a0in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Among the results, the following stand out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of the CPOD index (decayed, lost or plugged teeth) which, at the age of 12, was 2.95 in 2000, 1.48 in 2006 and 1.18 in 2013;<\/li>\n<li>Increase in the percentage of young people with healthy gums, which in 2006 was 29% for the age of 12 and 22% for the age of 15, while in 2013 stood at 51.7% for the age of 12 and 41.8% at the age of 18.<\/li>\n<li>Increase in the average number of patients with fissure sealants, which in 2006 was 1.60 at the age of 12 and 0.86 at the age of 15, while in 2013 it was 3.61 at the age of 12 and 1.31 at the age of 18;<\/li>\n<li>Increase in the percentage of children and young people who brush their teeth at night, before going to bed, which in 2006 was 35% at the age of 6, 51% at the age of 12 and 45% at the age of 15, while in 2013 that percentage was 84% at the age of 6, 87% at the age of 12 and 84% at the age of 18.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The study was co-ordinated by\u00a0Rui Calado, Cristina Sousa Ferreira, Paulo Nogueira and Paulo Ribeiro Melo.
