Throughout my career as a dentist I have divided my time between family, teaching oral surgery at the Faculdade de Medicina Dent\u00e1ria da Universidade do Porto (FMDUP) and the private clinic\u201d. Germano rocha doesn\u2019t need introduction and it is in this simple and humble way that he starts our conversation and summarizes his immense career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DentalPro:<\/strong> Can you update us on your resume since we last spoke in 2012?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Germano Rocha:<\/strong> Most importantly, in the last seven years and in the socioprofessional field, I had the privilege of being part of a remarkable group of colleagues, in the so-called Comiss\u00e3o Constitutiva of the Col\u00e9gio da Especialidade de Cirurgia Oral , which allowed the award of the Oral Surgery Specialist title to the first group of dentists and, subsequently, the formation of the Col\u00e9gio da Especialidade .<\/p>\n\n\n\n DP:<\/strong> You have an extensive experience as a teacher. How do you characterize the training and research in dentistry in Portugal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n GR:<\/strong> As far as training is concern, it exists in two different levels: college-level training leading to an integrated master\u2019s degree and postgraduate training at universities or at various levels, such as the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD), scientific societies and even other private groups. The undergraduate training in Portugal is extraordinary, as julged by the testimonies of the many Erasmus students who visit many foreign universities every year, and on the other hand, by the example of young dentists looking for other countries to work in, and already more than 1,500 colleagues are recognized for their high professional skills. It should also be noted that the international recognition of dentistry education in Portugal has been increasing and many are choosing our country to do their basic training. Last year alone, the number foreign students enrolled in Portuguese colleges increased by 37,5%. As for the research, and as I said in 2012, research in Portugal is fine and recommended, but it could be much better if there were not so many constrains on its funding, namely from the Science and Technology Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
