Petition: Dentists demand early retirement age

The Union of Dentists (SMD) has launched a public petition entitled “ Special scheme for bringing forward the retirement age for dentists ”, intending to create a legal framework that allows these professionals to retire earlier.

According to the SMD, clinical practice in dentistry entails physical, psychological, and even chemical strain that accumulates over the years, putting professionals’ health at risk. Demanding postures, long working hours, and the inherent stress of the profession are factors that have led many dentists to suffer from musculoskeletal problems, chronic stress, and other debilitating conditions.

In Portugal, there are already professions recognized as high-risk or stressful, which benefit from special early retirement schemes. The union argues that dentistry should be included in this group, as is the case in other countries.

“Reality shows that many colleagues reach the end of their careers with serious health problems. It’s urgent to create conditions that allow them to retire with dignity and on time,” emphasizes João Neto, president of the SMD.

What is at stake

The petition aims to:

  • Legal recognition of dentistry as a rapidly attriting profession;
  • Early retirement age, without disproportionate penalties;
  • Protecting the health of dentists, valuing their contribution to society.

How to support

The union calls on all professionals and civil society to join this cause by signing the petition.
