Under the theme “Dental Medicine – Integration of Health, Functionality, and Aesthetics,” the symposium takes place at the Azurém Campus in Guimarães, with free entry for all interested professionals and students. Organized by the MicroElectroMechanical Systems Center (CMEMS) at the University of Minho, the event aims to promote integration between fundamental science, engineering, and clinical practice, exploring innovative solutions for oral and facial rehabilitation.
The opening session will feature researcher Sara Madeira, who will discuss “Biomimetic Implants and Light-Based Approaches for Oral Health,” highlighting the growing role of optical and photonic technologies in modern dental medicine. Among the invited speakers are Filipe Silva, presenting the latest solutions in ultra-thin zirconia and PEEK crowns for aesthetic and non-invasive treatments, and Lia Rimondini (University of Piemonte Orientale, Italy), an international reference in bone regeneration guided by electromagnetic and mechanical stimuli.
Regulatory aspects will also be addressed, with Michael Gasik (Aalto University, Finland) reviewing the new European legislation and its implications for dental clinics. The program also includes presentations on aesthetic and functional bone distraction (Simei Freire, Brazil) and a session dedicated to new technologies in dental aesthetics, featuring transdermal collagen biostimulation by Paulo Morais (Customize Medical) and photoacoustic piezoporation by Carlos Serpa (LaserLeap Technologies).
The symposium will conclude with a roundtable discussion on “How Far Can — or Should — the Dentist’s Role in Facial Aesthetics Go?”, bringing together specialists from various fields to debate ethics, training, and clinical innovation.
The initiative, supported by the FunFibRAI project (FCT), reflects the commitment of the University of Minho and CMEMS to position Portugal at the forefront of research and development in biomaterials and advanced medical technologies, fostering dialogue between academia and clinical practice.
