The European Day of Periodontology will take place on May 12 of 2017. Portugal is one the countries associated with this cause, in the fight against the periodontal disease, whose goal is to raise awareness among the public opinion for the importance of keeping their gums healthy throughout the entire life.
The European Day of Periodontology is organised by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) alongside the Portuguese Society of Periodontology and Implants (SPPI), a member of the EFP, aiming to remind the public that the periodontal health care is an effective and affordable way to improve oral health, general health and public health. Accordingly, the SSPI is preparing a whole set of awareness-raising activities throughout the country, starting on May 9th, to draw attention to periodontal disease: its causes, risks, prevention and treatment.
Ricardo Faria e Almeida, president of SSPI, states that “this is a real public health issue. Warning the public about the fact that gum bleeding is not normal is something vital, as well as spreading the idea that is possible to treat it. Raising awareness among health professionals for these subjects is also crucial, as that is the only way to decrease the high prevalence rate in Portugal, which largely surpasses the fellow Europeans.”
