A team of researchers from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, made up of Francisco Caramelo (researcher from the Laboratory of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics of ICBR – Institute of Clinical and Biomedical Research of Coimbra) and Francisco do Vale (director of the Institute of Orthodontics), form a national venture to develop an innovative 3D simulation and visualization platform for the planning of facial surgeries and orthodontic-surgical treatments.
Named “ARTHUR – 3D Dentofacial Surgery Full Planning”, the project – which won funding of around 800 thousand euros under the Portugal 2020 program – is led by CODI, the Instituto Português da Face (Portuguese Institute of Face) and it features the participation of the University of Aveiro. The objective is to develop a platform capable of predicting, in a photo-realistic way, the real impact on the patient’s facial mask (soft tissues) and possible changes in bone structure and teeth (hard tissues).
