OMD creates a COVID-19 Monitor Group

The Portuguese Dentists Association (Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas – OMD) has created a Monitor Group to keep track the COVID-19’s evolution in Portugal. The group’s leader is the dentist Paulo Ribeiro de Melo, president of the OMD General Council.

Their mission is to provide information, issue recommendations, remain alert to developments in order to keep dentists up to date. Paulo Ribeiro de Melo explains that “considering the specific nature of dentistry, we decided to create this support group to keep all colleagues informed about the situation and also the best practices to be adopted to avoid contagion. While it is true that practicing dentistry already requires many demanding control and hygiene measures, at this stage it is advisable to increase our care”.

From the information already available, the OMD Monitor Group’s leader highlights that “the OMD’s model serves as a guide for a contingency plan in any dental clinic or office built on the guidelines issued by the Directorate-General of Health, so that companies adopt a contingency plan”.

Among the main prevention recommendations for the practice of dentistry is the use of FFP2 masks with valves, or a change of the usual masks every 2 hours to avoid a loss in effectiveness, the reinforcement of using gowns, gloves and eye protection, and the cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces and work environments immediately after each consultation.

All information will be available on the OMD’s website and social networks (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn) being updated whenever necessary.
