Miguel Pavão, who headed the A list in the elections for the Portuguese Dentists Association (OMD), is the new president of the class, having won with 3462 votes. The ballot took place on Saturday, the 27thof June, and counted 4748 dentists taking part, amongst them 95 voted blank and 40 votes were considered null. The abstention rate exceeded 50%.
João Caramês, president of the General Assembly Board and Electoral Commission of the OMD, said in a statement that “this electoral act observed a unique participation in the history of the Portuguese Dentists Association with 4748 voting colleagues. If on the one hand, the number reflects the growth in the number of associate dentists, it still represents an unmistakable example of the sector’s vitality. Congratulations to all!”.
He also stressed that “in elections, and above all personal interests, the ‘voice’ of those who vote, the transparency of the electoral process and the rigour in the counting of results must prevail. As president of this Electoral Commission, I share with you the feeling of fulfilling this duty and that we have done everything to comply with the statutory and ethical principles defined by the OMD General Assembly Board in this electoral act”.
João Caramês took the opportunity to wish “all the best in accomplishing such noble goals during the next four years. The victory in these elections rewards his dynamism, sense of galvanisation and social awareness amongst his colleagues. We believe that together with his team he will take on with dedication the defence of the interests of Dentists and the search for new and good paths that honour the prestige and dignity of Portuguese Dentistry”.
And he adds: “If the present registers change, the future calls for our audacity led by Miguel Pavão. Only real solidarity between colleagues will make an association stronger. To successfully challenge the coming years, we must adopt a constructive and united attitude between everyone, recognising that the defence and respect for Dentistry is first and foremost a part of each one of us”.
