Portuguese stomatologist creates European database of surgical interventions
The Portuguese stomatologist David Ângelo is building a database that will register all surgical interventions on temporomandibular joints conducted in Europe.
After receiving “Prémio de Investigação 2019” from S.O.R.G. – Strasbourg Osteosynthesis Research Group, a prestigious European scientific community promoting clinical research – David Ângelo was funded by the European Society of Temporomandibular Joint Surgeons (ESTMJS) and started, in 2020, to design an IT platform that will register diagnosis, interventions and post-surgery evolution of all patients within the European community, in a rigorous and easy to use fashion by the doctors.
The temporomandibular joint disorder is a debilitating pathology of the jaw muscles and/or of the temporomandibular joint (the area where the jaw shares a joint with the skull bone), most common among women between the ages of 20 and 50 years old. Alongside intense jaw and face pain, the disorder may compromise the chewing of food, block the joint and/or limit mouth opening, in some patients, in a severe way.
