OMD: elections determine new boards for the Specialty Colleges

The elections for the Specialty Colleges of Oral Surgery, Periodontology, Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics of the Order of Dentists determined on 30th April, after elections with high participation.

Of the four Colleges, only Oral Surgery presented four different lists for voting. Of these, List C, headed by Gil Fernandes Alves, was the winner with 44 votes from a total of 117 voters.

The remaining Colleges elected their respective Boards from single lists, as was the case with the Specialty College of Periodontology, with Helena Rebelo as head of the list, the Specialty College of Paediatric Dentistry, which elected Paula Faria Marques as President and the Specialty College of Orthodontics, in which Luís Jardim, President of the Board of Directors of this College, won.

According to the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD) “there was a great participation in this electoral act of the specialists of the four colleges, showing an unequivocal example of vitality on their part”.

Of the four electoral colleges, the Oral Surgery College had the highest percentage of voters (84.4%), followed by Orthodontics (84%), Periodontology (69.8%) and Paediatric Dentistry with 64.1% of votes counted.

OMD also points out that the “electronic vote was the most common form of voting in this electoral act”, with a “large number of specialist members using this form of voting”, with almost 73% of the Paediatric Dentistry voters using this digital method, followed by 67.7% of Orthodontics, 59.5% of Periodontology and 57.3% of Oral Surgery.

From the last elections, in which only the College of Orthodontics ran, there was a 30% increase in the percentage of voters, from 54% to 84%.

The elections that took place on 30 April elected the new boards of the Specialty Colleges of Oral Surgery, Periodontology, Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics of the Portuguese Dental Association.
