Luís Monteiro: “This is a window of opportunity for the prevention and detection of oral cancer”

DentalPro presents an excerpt of an extensive interview with Luís Monteiro, Professor at the Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde, (IUCS-CESPU) and coordinator of the post-graduate course in Medicine and Oral Pathology and the post-graduate course in Laster at the IUCS.

Luís Monteiro took part in the new classification of potentially malignant lesions in the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Oral Cancer.

How do you feel being the first Portuguese dentist to be part of this classification?

More important than being first, or any other order, is being able to give my personal contribution as a Portuguese dentist, in a way, representing our country in a meeting with a group of international authors whom I have always admired. On the other hand, it is also a responsibility to represent oral medicine, which is done very well in our country by many colleagues, in an important workshop of the WHO Collaborative Oral Cancer Centre study group.

We should be proud of many of our colleagues who, in various areas of dentistry, or medicine, are contributing worldwide to scientific advances in certain areas with the aim of improving diagnosis, therapeutic options and the quality of life of our patients.

We have colleagues who are founders of the largest European associations of oral medicine and who continue to be a world reference in oral medicine, colleagues in implantology, periodontology, surgery, orthodontics, etc., who, sometimes right next to us, represent our country in a unique way worldwide, and whom I personally look up to as an example and admiration.
