OMD has reported that Fernando Guerra, current President of the General Council of the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD) and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, was elected as Member of the Academy of the National Academy of Medicine of Portugal, reported the OMD. According to the OMD, Fernando Guerra is the first dentist to be entrusted with this role, which is assigned to a maximum of 50 people.
Guerra will occupy Chair XXXII, succeeding professor Leonor Parreira, who retired and acquired the status of Academic Emeritus. The General Assembly of this organism, which is chaired by professor Manuel Antunes, also elected two Members of the Academy and the new social bodies. Professor Duarte Nuno Vieira will serve as President of the Board of Directors.
The National Academy of Medicine of Portugal was founded in 1991 and it aims to promote scientific research in Medicine and Biology. This association is dedicated to the production of reports and memoirs related to health and subjects of a medical, social and cultural nature, by its own initiative or by request from public or private organisations. It also participates in the country’s major health discussions, offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, and facilitates biomedical research and science lessons. It also plays an important role in the recognition and consecration of scientific merit.
