On June 29, the Escola Superior de Saúde do Porto will host the IV National Reunion of the Sindicato dos Médicos Dentistas (SMD) and the III Odonto Summit. Vera Cláudia Castelo, president of the organizing committee, says that this event “is for all professionals” and that “everyone’s attendance increases the voice of the SMD”, which will bring more strength to the community.
What differentiating moments will take place at the IV National Reunion of the SMD/III Odonto Summit?
There will be several highlights, including a round table with the participation of Professor Manuel Marques Ferreira, Professor João Braga, and Dr. Serafim Freitas; scientific topics and issues of concern to the profession, such as radiology, legionella, taxation, regulation, and legislation.
What are the organizing committee’s expectations for this double event?
The state of the profession is worrying. Everyone’s mobilization is essential. The organizing committee hopes that everyone can contribute to improving the profession and the dentist. The SMD wants all colleagues registered and not registered with the syndicate to come together so that we can find a way forward and everyone benefits from it.
Of the topics under discussion, what are the most urgent issues for the SMD?
Undoubtedly, the regulation of health plans, the reformulation of the dentist’s voucher, the career of a dentist in the NHS, and the amendment of decree 99-2024.
On the scientific front, what new solutions will be presented?
One of the new solutions that will be presented is the therapeutic approach of ozone therapy for patients and professionals.
Cristina Mesquita, a physiotherapist, will be there to present “strategies and defenses in musculoskeletal symptoms”. How important is it for dentistry to interact with other specialties?
The physiotherapist is almost essential for the dentist. We suffer a lot from musculoskeletal injuries, some of them serious, so this interaction is crucial for all professionals.

What is missing or what can be done in this area?
There’s a need for more information for the whole community, whether it’s younger people with preventive information or older people with preventive and therapeutic information.
Four years since it was founded, at what level of performance does the SMD present itself in this edition?
The SMD presents a lot of the work it has done in the last four years and is more confident because barriers have been overcome and the path is being mapped out with the advantage of some experience in the field.
What proposal does the SMD have for undecided colleagues to join its fight?
