The dentist Rui Amaral Mendes is part of the team of experts responsible for writing the guidelines “Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw”, recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. This is the first time that a Portuguese dentist has been involved in the creation of ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) guidelines.
Rui Amaral Mendes, contacted by DentalPro, said that “for the first time, dentists, oncologists and specialists in medicine and oral surgery are establishing joint guidelines on the matter, and are doing so with the high ‘sponsorship’ of the two most relevant bodies in the area of treatment of oncology patients: the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer”.
He also added that these guidelines, presented at the end of July, “constitute a milestone with regard to this topic, as they reflect a consensus across the entire medical community involved in the treatment of cancer patients”.
