OMD has more than 10,000 members with active memberships

At the end of last year, the Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas (Portuguese Dental Association) (OMD) had 10,653 members with active memberships, exceeding, for the first time, the threshold of 10,000 members with active memberships. The conclusions of the study “The Numbers of the Association” show that there are 1,509 dentists that work exclusively abroad, and they estimate that there are 9,385 dentists that work exclusively in Portugal. There are also 327 dentists who work both in Portugal and abroad and 847 registered dentists who do not practice the profession.

The study “The Numbers of the Association”, published annually, maps the profile of the profession in Portugal. This year’s edition underwent changes in methodology to accommodate the reality of the profession. The surgeon general of OMD, Orlando Monteiro da Silva, explains that “in recent years, we have seen that a statistically significant number of dentists have chosen to keep their active membership with OMD, whilst they work abroad. Thus, from this edition on, and with data from December 2018, the number of ballots awarded up to the end of each year will now be considered, with a distinction between the dentists with active memberships with OMD and dentists who are practising in Portugal”.
