Madeira will allow a career in dentistry in the public health service

Miguel Pavão, President of the Portuguese Dental Association (OMD), travelled to Funchal to attend what he considers to be “A historic day for dentistry in our country, since it is the first time that dentists integrated into a public service will have a career, like other State employees. It is a milestone in our profession and the Autonomous Region of Madeira is the first to take this step.”

During the meeting with the Regional Health Secretary, the OMD’s President thanked the Regional Government for its commitment, stressing that “today RAM has done justice to a gap in the National Health Service and RAM gives an example that the integration of dentists is viable and necessary. We hope that this is a starting point for the autonomous regions of Azores and the mainland can quickly follow this example.”

The secretary of Health and Civil protection, Pedro Ramos, pointed out the “historic and important moment” of this approval that “shows the pioneering spirit of the Regional Health Service and the Region’s respect for our professionals”.

Fabião Castro Silva, representative of OMD in RAM, stated “it is with great pride that I see Madeira taking this step, which is so significant for our profession. It is a step that completes the full integration of dentistry in SESARAM”.

The new career in dentistry will cover all dentists working in the health centres of Madeira and Porto Santo, and in the Dr Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal.
