Dentist José Frias Bulhosa has been reappointed as coordinator of the National Oral Health Coordination of the National Health Service (CNSO-SNS), as published in the Diário da República on 1 October (Despacho n.º 11970/2026).
The Portuguese Dental Association (OMD) welcomed the reappointment on its website and extended its best wishes for good work and success in continuing the reforms undertaken for the sector.
The new order, in addition to retaining the coordinator, a role José Frias Bulhosa has held since February 2024, restructures and enlarges the working group. More dentists with experience in primary care, hospital care and the IPO in Coimbra will join the new structure. In total, the team will comprise 18 multidisciplinary professionals (until now it had six members).
In light of this news, the OMD reaffirms that it is essential to follow through rigorously on the strategic guidelines already set out, namely the recommendations of the SNS | Oral Health 2.0 report and the guidance contained in the Guidance Manual for the Organisation of Oral Health Services in the SNS. This continuity, and the demand for delivery, take on particular relevance at the present time, following the approval of Law n.º 45/2026, which establishes the dental medicine career in the SNS.
“The OMD demands the full implementation of these measures, and remains committed and vigilant in monitoring the work of the CNSO-SNS to ensure the effective valuing of professionals and Oral Health Functional Units, for the continuous improvement of citizens’ access to basic oral health care through the public sector,” it states on its website.
